  • Merchant Account Fees Killing You?

Are you riding the roller coaster ride of thinking that you made some good profit only to realize that most of it was eaten up by the fees charged by your merchant?  You are not alone.  Many small business owners find that they have trouble pricing things in a way that makes them money instead of making the fees.  This is really the small business owners fault, however many business owners start with a disadvantage.  Their are numerous merchants and twice as mny fee structures.  The range is significant in what a business might pay in merchant account fees

If you want to make money rather than paying all of your profit to the credit card companies in fees, then you must be willing to shop around and look for the best fee structure that you can get.  Just mentioning to your current merchant service that you are shopping around will usually get you a better rate from them.  Amazing that they can give you a better rate now, right?  Well, believe it.  They absolutely can.  You may find that if you can hook up straight with Visa or Mastercard you can find the best rate possible.  You need to make a regular habit of shopping too so that your merchant provider is always on their toes and giving you the best deal possible.  They want to make money and they like to make LOTS, so make sure that you keep them honest by looking out for your business bby shopping around regularly.  Let me give you some keywords that will almost invariably get you even a little better price than what they may offer after you have mentioned that you are shopping.  Those words are: "Is that the best you can do"?  These simple words often will save you a lot of money.  Try it in your personal life as well.  You will love saving money left and right, especially in the merchant fees in your business.

Here is an interesting article on the kind of hold credit card companies have.  Don't ever feel bad about keeping your merchant honest by shopping around.  There are merchants out there who can make a win win situation for you and them without killing either party off.

  • What to Fix if Things are Slow

Every business goes through slow times and faster times.  So if things really do start to slow down, what should you focus on?  Well, here are a few small business tips to help you with that question!

For most small businesses the first thing they need to look at is marketing.  How many times have you heard about companies cutting back on marketing when things get slow?  You should do just the opposite!  Now this doesn't mean you just continue to do what you're doing in marketing.  You'll probably have to look at some new ways of marketing to draw in new customers that you may not have been reaching before.

Have you considered taking your business online?  If you don't already have a website you should!  I don't want to talk about all of the different ways to market online, but here are a couple you can look up:
    • Search Engine Optimization - takes a long time to get rankings, so work on it for future business.
    • Pay Per Click - This is the fast way to get traffic from the search engines, you just have to pay for it.
    • Social Media - The goal with this one is to get people talking about you!
    • Banners - Not as effective as it used to be, but can help with branding.
Use your own judgment when you launch a campaign online.  Don't get into things that your gut tells you will either take too long or may draw in the wrong crowds.

  • Go Wireless in Your Business

We live in a pretty amazing time.  Just think about how many things you can do these days without a cord holding you down!  There are laptops with wireless radios to surf the internet, cell phone, GPS devices, and all sorts of things.  Pretty incredible really.

Well, here's something that you may not have considered if you run a business.  Have you ever thought about wireless credit card processing?  This could be the ideal solution for your business if you're on the go a lot or do business in different locations each day!

Here's an example.  Let's say you are running a booth at a trade show or convention and are planning on selling stuff at that venue.  Well, you don't want to just accept cash payments since a lot of people just don't carry cash these days.  And you also know that no one is going to let you just write down their credit card number to charge it later.  So what do you do?  Well, this is where have a wireless device for processing credit cards could really come in handy!

There are lot's of places to use this type of technology.  If you run a delivery business, retail location, or an on the road salesman you can make use of this.  Really, anyone that needs to be able to accept credit cards at a remote location can make really good use of this technology.

Most of the actual wireless terminals come with a printer in the same unit and a rechargeable battery pack.  The companies that make these things have really gone out of their way to make it usable.
